Lecture Topic: FSMTA Advanced Sports Massage

This course is designed for healthcare practitioners working as Licensed Massage Therapists to gain practical and theoretical skills necessary to Sports Massage. This workshop may serve as a gateway for a new or veteran therapist pursuing a career in a Sports and Fitness setting or specifically treating the leisure, active, collegiate and professional athlete. The live class provides a valuable opportunity to work side-by-side with experienced Sports Therapists. Refinement through supervised practical scenarios, Therapists will work on each other in a safe, supportive, and professional environment. Developing skill and expertise by enhancing the specific techniques for specific conditions used for this special population. Gaining confidence for the newer therapist while validating the seasoned therapist. The purpose of this course is to enrich a therapist’s understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of Sports Massage. It will provide Therapists with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyze posture and range of movement. It will also provide Therapists with a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in Sports and Fitness areas. Modalities are addressed with an emphasis on hydrotherapy. Practitioners will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatments. Live class includes lecture and hands-on workshop by FSMTA Sports Instructors. Tables, linens, lubricant and appropriate clothes are required for participation. At the completion of the course a certificate of achievement is given after passing, a minimum 70%, a pen and paper test administered onsite.
Short Bio:David R. Gonzalez holds a Master’s degree in Exercise and Sports science with a concentration in Performance Enhancement & Injury Prevention, and a post Master Certificate in Rehabilitation Sciences form California University of Pennsylvania. He also earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science with concentration in Cardiac Rehab & Strength Conditioning from Florida International University. Davis also graduated from the Physical Therapy Assistant and the Emergency Medical Technician program at Miami Dade College. David is the owner of the Institute of Functional Performance, a company dedicated to providing quality and professional services in the areas of Fitness, Massage & Bodywork and Physical Therapy. He also provides educational seminars and CEU classes for massage therapists and personal trainers. He is licensed as a physical therapist assistant and a massage therapist in the State of Florida and has been a Certified Personal Trainer for the last 22 years. By combining his expertise, David has been able to maximize his pracice by integrating the best of bodywork manipulations and exercise in order to help improve health, resulting in excellent quality of care to his patients and clients. Besides working for IFP, Davis is also an Associate Professor at Miami Dade College where he is the Director and instructor in the massage therapy program. Some of David’s work experience includes positions as personal trainer and massage therapist for the prestigious Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura, Florida Nunez Tennis Academy, Pritkin Longevity Center and Florida College of Natural Health. Some of his accomplishments include being elected three times (2005, 2008 & 2010) Sports Massage Therapist of the Yeat by the Florida State Massage Therapy Association in Dade County. He was also elected Teacher of the Year while teaching at the Florida College of Natural Health and was a Teacher of the Year nominee for the State of Florida’s Career College Association (CCA), both in 2003. David holds Certifications with the Natural Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) as Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES). He is also Certified with the American Heart Association as a CPR & AED Instructor and with Kinesio as a Certified Kinesiotaping Practitioner (CKTP).
